I had an idea in my head for a long time. I wanted a picture of the three of my children wrapped in the American flag. 4th of July was coming up and I wanted to get this shot to send to friends and family to wish them a Happy Independence Day. It’s one of my favorite holidays, and I love anything with a flag on it.
I went to Target, grabbed a flag, and we headed to Little Island to take some pictures.
The bickering started before we even made it to the beach.
“Mom, he’s touching me.”
“Ugh, it is windy. Do we have to do this? Can we go to Dairy Queen instead?”
“Don’t throw rocks at your sister.”
Let’s just say that they weren’t very cooperative. I was alone, Wes was on duty. Usually, he helps me wrangle them for shoots. I got frustrated. And after a few shots, I called it a day. Instead, we skipped rocks out on the water and eventually made our way to the car with the promise of Dairy Queen after all.
I took a few shots here and there – but went home assuming there wasn’t anything on the card worth looking at.
A few days later, I finally uploaded my card (which is weird, I dump my cards every day) and you can imagine my surprise when I opened up Lightroom and saw these treasures.
I love these pictures so much, they were everything that I envisioned and more. If I had pushed and tried to get them to cooperate, I most likely never would have gotten these. Sometimes you just need to cut your losses and try again another day. And I also think that sometimes you need a little space in between the capture and the seeing. It was such a treat to forget about these and then to find something that made me so happy.
I blew this up big and they are going on my walls.
If you are going to take pictures with the flag, you need to be respectful. Don’t let it touch the ground. And make sure that the stars are facing the left. Here is a source for the proper handling of the US flag.
